Michael Lam
Mobile-First Design Specialist
Teaching developers across Quarry Bay and Hong Kong how to build smarter, faster websites with mobile-first principles that actually work in the real world.
Core Areas of Expertise
Michael specializes in practical, implementable design methodologies that solve real problems developers face when building for mobile devices.
Mobile-First Methodology
Starting design from the smallest screen and progressively enhancing for larger devices. It’s not a constraint — it’s the best way to build intentional, focused interfaces.
Responsive Grid Systems
Breakpoints, flexbox layouts, and fluid typography that scale beautifully across 320px phones to 4K monitors. He covers CSS Grid, alignment strategies, and common pitfalls.
Touch Interface Design
Buttons, tap targets, and gestures that actually work on mobile devices. Michael teaches the practical side — hit zones, spacing, and avoiding frustrating UX patterns.
Performance Optimization
Image optimization, lazy loading, and reducing render-blocking resources. Speed matters on mobile networks, and Michael shows how to measure and improve real-world performance.
Accessibility Standards
WCAG compliance, semantic HTML, and inclusive design practices. He emphasizes that accessible design is better design for everyone, not just a compliance checklist.
Asian Market Considerations
Designing for Hong Kong’s unique device ecosystem, network conditions, and user behaviors. Chinese typography, right-to-left support, and regional performance challenges.
His Story
Michael’s interest in web design wasn’t theoretical. It started in 2010 when he was frustrated — genuinely annoyed — by websites that crashed and became unusable on his older mobile phone. Most sites looked great on desktop but fell apart on anything smaller. That frustration became curiosity, then obsession.
He pursued a degree in Interactive Media Design at City University of Hong Kong, finishing in 2011. Rather than jumping into freelance work, he spent five years working at local digital agencies in Quarry Bay and Mong Kok, building websites for everything from financial services to retail. That’s where he saw the pattern clearly: clients and developers alike were designing for desktop first, then trying to squeeze everything onto mobile afterward. It always resulted in compromises, poor performance, and frustrated users.
By 2016, Michael was convinced that the industry approach was backwards. Mobile-first wasn’t just a buzzword — it was fundamentally the better way to design. He started experimenting with his own projects, documenting what worked and what didn’t. He presented his findings at local meetups and conferences, and gradually, people started asking if he’d teach them.
When DesignFlow Academy Limited approached him in 2019, he saw an opportunity to solve a real problem. Many developers across Hong Kong understood responsive design in theory but struggled with implementation. They lacked structured, practical training. Michael built the curriculum from scratch, focusing on real projects, real constraints, and real devices. Not theory — actual work.
Since then, he’s trained over 400 developers. His courses are known for being direct, practical, and sometimes brutally honest about what works and what doesn’t. He doesn’t sugarcoat design decisions. He shows what breaks, why it breaks, and how to fix it before your users encounter the problem.
Discovery
Frustrated by poorly optimized websites on mobile devices, sparking interest in responsive design.
Education
Completed B.A. in Interactive Media Design from City University of Hong Kong.
Agency Experience
Five years at Quarry Bay digital agencies, working with 200+ enterprise clients across Asia-Pacific on responsive design systems.
Independent Practice
Documented mobile-first methodologies, presented at conferences, and built reputation as a mobile design specialist.
Education Leader
Senior Instructor at DesignFlow Academy Limited. Developed curriculum, trained 400+ developers in mobile-first design principles.
His Teaching Philosophy
Michael doesn’t believe in theory without practice. Every principle is backed by real code, real projects, and real-world challenges.
Start With Constraint
Mobile-first isn’t limiting — it’s clarifying. When you’re designing for 320 pixels wide, you can’t hide behind complexity. Every element has to earn its place.
Test on Real Devices
Chrome DevTools is useful. Real phones are essential. Michael’s courses include testing on actual devices — not just browser emulation. You’ll see what actually happens.
Embrace Incremental Enhancement
Build a solid foundation first. CSS enhancements layer on top. JavaScript adds interactivity. If something breaks, the core experience still works.
Performance Is Part of Design
A beautiful design that takes 8 seconds to load isn’t beautiful. Michael teaches optimization as a core design skill, not an afterthought.
Notable Work & Achievements
Course Development: Mobile-First Fundamentals

WCAG ComplianceIntegrated accessibility as a core component of all curriculum. Advocates for WCAG AA compliance as standard practice, not afterthought. Works with students to understand inclusive design benefits everyone, regardless of ability.
What Developers Say
“I wasn’t getting responsive design before — it felt like I was always patching things together. Michael’s approach made it click. Now I actually start with mobile first and it saves me hours on every project. His courses aren’t fluffy. You’ll write code.”
“We brought Michael in to help our team transition to mobile-first workflows. He didn’t just teach theory — he looked at our actual projects, found the problems, and showed us exactly how to fix them. Three months later we were shipping 30% faster.”
“Honestly, I thought I knew responsive design. Turns out I was doing a lot of things backwards. Michael’s teaching style is direct — he doesn’t sugarcoat what’s broken. That’s exactly what I needed. The performance improvements alone made it worth it.”
“The accessibility module completely changed how I approach design. I wasn’t ignoring it intentionally — I just didn’t understand why it mattered. Now I see it as good design for everyone. That’s a big shift in mindset and Michael helped us get there.”
